When I say it out loud, or write it out like this it seems silly. The same way a word starts to sound less like a word the more you say it. Regardless I find myself coming back to the realization that living within 30 minutes of outdoor climbing is extremely important to me right now.
A decent climate wouldn't hurt either.
Looking ahead I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't just an excuse to keep moving around. I'm not sure what areas with long seasons I would even consider. What world class areas like Bishop and Hueco have in rocks they lack in their respective cities. The same can be said about Las Vegas, and Boulder is so damn cool I'm not sure if I could stand it.
Chattanooga, Flagstaff, and Salt Lake City all seem like they might fit the bill, but I'm sure they have their drawback as well.
All I can say right now is that gym climbing doesn't count for anything, and I need to be around some real rock, wherever that may be.

I can relate to this on so many levels. The thing I always try to remember is that life takes you places for a reason. While you may feel as though the place you currently live does not fit the bill in terms of available rock, think as to why you are there in the first place. Something drew you there, whether that be the unknown of a new place, friends, family, etc.
ReplyDeleteI feel for you Max and know that nothing replaces the satisfaction of climbing outside. Hang in there and the sun will come out and dry the rocks around you, hopefully inspiring you in a way that makes the place you live worth all the hassle.
I climbed on rock once in September, then on January 2nd, and haven't since. I feel your pain. My recommendation would be Flagstaff, if you do move anywhere. So many different types of rock, and a nice laid back attitude.
ReplyDeleteI headed out to Leavenworth this weekend and lucked out with perfect weather and some sticky granite. It was much needed, I'm glad that you guys both commented. it makes me realize that all serious climbers have the same dilemma, and knowing that makes it more bearable. I'm confident the spring and summer here will be pretty great as far as temps go.
